Payment processing for peptide businesses: why you get shut down and how to stop it

Jonathan Cole · · Payments Operations

The most common emergency call we get isn't about product. It's a brand or clinic whose processor froze the account on a Friday with a six-month reserve hold. Here is why it happens and how to set up so it doesn't happen to you.

Why mainstream processors terminate

Aggregators like Stripe, Square and PayPal underwrite at the category level. Peptides, GLP-1 programs, compounding and telehealth sit on their prohibited or restricted lists regardless of how compliant your specific business is. You may get approved by an automated onboarding flow; you will be reviewed manually once volume rises, and the review ends the account.

What a high-risk merchant account is

A dedicated merchant ID with an acquiring bank that has chosen to underwrite your category. Underwriting is manual, takes 3 to 7 business days with a complete file, and pricing is higher than retail processing with a rolling reserve at the start that steps down with clean history.

What underwriters want to see

  • Entity documents, EIN, owner ID, three months of bank statements
  • Prior processing statements if you have them, including chargeback ratios
  • A live website with clear terms, refund policy, contact details and compliant product language
  • For telehealth: the prescriber model and dispensing pharmacy relationships documented

Redundancy

Run more than one MID and load-balance between them. Keep an ACH or eCheck rail live. For brands that need it, a crypto rail as backup. The goal is that no single decision by a single bank stops revenue.

Chargebacks

Chargeback ratio is the number that kills accounts. Use clear billing descriptors, alerts that let you refund before a dispute posts, and representment support. Keep the ratio under 1% and the reserve steps down; go over 2% and you're back to square one.

We arrange this through our payments partner, which processes more than $50 million a year for peptide and telehealth merchants. Start with a processing review and we'll tell you what to change before the file is submitted.
